PAUL
MAVRIDES' comics,
paintings, graphics, performances and writings encompass a disturbing,
if laughable catalog of the social pathologies and shortcomings
of human civilization. To some, he may be best known for bludgeon-like
proselytizing on behalf of J.R. "Bob" Dobbs' Church
of the SubGenius, or his work with Gilbert
Shelton on the Fabulous
Furry Freak Brothers.
Mavrides' caustic paintings depict
a captivating variety of social and political disasters. He
most recently served as Art Director and computer graphics animator
on the award-winning documentary GRASS,
a history of American marijuana prohibition. In 1996, Mavrides
won an important tax
battle with the California Board of Equalization establishing
that what cartoonists and comic creators trade in are
ideas, not pieces of paper. Mavrides' favorite activity
is his outdoor play period where he portrays his favorite roles:
space alien, anarchist radical or kooky artist. He displays
large muscle coordination while running with scissors.
